The vibrant streets of Clapham are known for their beautiful period conversions, but as many residents know, those stunning Victorian footprints often come with one challenge: the compact bathroom.

Our latest project in Clapham Common involved a top-floor apartment with a bathroom that felt more like a utility closet than a place to relax. Our client, James, wanted to move away from the “cluttered and cramped” look and transition into something that felt like a high-end boutique hotel.

The Challenge: Space vs. Luxury

The original layout was dominated by a bulky pedestal sink and an oversized radiator that ate up precious floor real estate. The goal was to maintain a full-sized bath while making the room feel twice as large.

The Inar Solution

To achieve this, we focused on visual continuity and smart fixtures:

  • Floating Fixtures: we installed a wall-hung vanity and a wall-mounted toilet. By showing more of the floor, the brain perceives the room as being much larger than it actually is.

  • The “Enveloping” Tile: We used deep forest green kit-kat tiles paired with a soft terrazzo floor. Running the floor tiles slightly up the side of the bath panel created a seamless look that removed the harsh “stopping point” of the tub.

  • Brass Accents: To lean into that Clapham boutique aesthetic, we used brushed brass hardware for the taps, shower mixer, and even the flush plate. It added a warmth that perfectly complemented the green tiling.

  • Hidden Storage: We carved out a recessed, mirrored wall cabinet above the sink, providing James with ample storage for toiletries without a single bottle cluttering the vanity top.

The Result: A Serene Escape

The transformation turned a cramped, forgotten room into a “Micro-Spa.” James now has a space that feels intentional, luxurious, and perfectly suited to his lifestyle. It’s proof that you don’t need a massive floor plan to have a massive impact.

“I honestly didn’t think we could fit a bath and a vanity of this size in here without it feeling tight, but the design makes it feel so airy. It’s my favorite room in the flat now.” — James, Clapham
